The Padrón is essentially the municipal register of everyone who lives in a specific town. While it sounds like a boring bit of paperwork, being “empadronado” is vital if you want to access public healthcare, register a child for school, or vote in local elections.
How to get it:
Visit your local Ayuntamiento (Town Hall). You will need:
- Your Passport and NIE.
- Proof of address: A rental contract (minimum 6 months) or your property deeds (Escritura).
- A recent utility bill in your name.
In Málaga city, you can often visit the OMAC (Municipal Citizen Attention Offices) in your neighborhood. It’s a quick process that usually results in a certificate handed to you on the spot!
